In 1991, limited stakes gambling was approved for 3 small mountain towns
in Colorado. Two of the three, Black Hawk and Central City which are located
within a couple of miles of each other, are about a half an hours drive
from Denver. The third gambling town, Cripple Creak, is located near Colorado
Springs and Pueblo in Southern Colorado.
Gaming
is limited to $5 per bet no matter what gaming device you are using. Blackjack
tables are very popular in most of the casinos along with rows upon rows
of slot machines. Other tables common in Colorado casinos are; let it
ride, 3 card poker, crazy 6's and some casinos have separate poker rooms.
With the advent of limited stakes gambling, these small towns were revived
with generally small casinos in existing buildings. Nevertheless, with
the overwhelming popularity, many new 'Vegas style' casinos have sprung
up with 4 star restaurants and fine lodging. However, if you would like
the rustic Colorado cabin-like casino experience, there are plenty still
surviving today to suit your needs.
There
are two ways to get to Black Hawk and Central City. One involves a beautiful
drive up the windy Clear creek Canyon on US 6 out of Golden. Follow the
scenic canyon to highway 119 and vere right, Black Hawk is located about
7 miles past the turn and Central City is only 1 mile further up the road
from there. The second option is to take I-70 west out of the metro area
and exit shortly before Idaho Springs at Colorado 119 which will lead
you up the hill into Black Hawk & Central City.
Cripple creek is located about an hour outside of Colorado Springs. Take
US 24 out of the springs and travel west to highway 67. Turn left (south)
and follow highway 67 all the way into Cripple creek.
